About Us
The Philosophy Department at UC Riverside is a pluralistic program. It has strengths in specific areas of analytic philosophy (including the theory of agency, moral and political philosophy, philosophy of mind, language, and logic, philosophy of science, and philosophy of religion), of contemporary European philosophy (contemporary German philosophy and critical theory), and of the history of philosophy (especially early modern through the nineteenth century). There is a large amount of interchange among the different areas of strength in the Department and most faculty work in multiple areas. Ours is a program where students can study both contemporary analytic and contemporary European philosophy, where there is a strong presence in the history of philosophy, and where no rigid barriers between these different areas of philosophy exist.

About UC Riverside:
Of the nine campuses in the University of California system, UC Riverside has been the fastest growing over the last half decade. Enrollment presently is over 16,000, of whom 1,600 are graduate students working in 29 doctoral programs. The campus library holdings exceed 1,500,000 volumes. Housing for graduate students and their families is relatively inexpensive and available on or near campus, as are campus child care and other services.
About the City of Riverside:
With a population of 250,000, Riverside lies 60 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains. It is within easy driving distance of most major recreational and cultural centers in Southern California. The J. Paul Getty Museum, The Music Center in Los Angeles, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Rose Bowl, The Huntington Library, and the Norton Simon Museum are easy to reach, as are beaches, the San Bernardino and Angeles National Forests, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree National Park, and the Mojave Desert. |
