UCR Philosophy Department News—2009
23-Dec-09: Congratulations to Eric Schwitzgebel, whose recent co-authored book is discussed in today’s New York Times.
22-Dec-09: Congratulations to Coleen MacNamara and Agnieszka Jaworska, who have won Center for Ideas Residential Fellowships for Spring, 2011. Their group will study “The Autonomous Self in an Age of Medicalization.”
05-Oct-09: Congratulations to Megan Gendreau for receiving a one year fellowship, from the Executive Committee on the Toxic Substances Research & Teaching Program at UC Davis, for her proposal entitled “Modeling Environmental Justice.” Competition for these fellowships is stiff and she was one of only 6 selected out of 68 proposals reviewed.
28-Sep-09: Congratulations to Robert Sanchez, who was awarded a UC MEXUS Small Grant for his project “A new direction for North American philosophy: toward Mexico.” This will allow him to do work (and improve his Spanish further) at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in Mexico City over the summer. (UNAM is Mexico’s most prestigious university and research center.)
23-Sep-09: Congratulations to Erich Reck, who recently won an NSF Scholar’s Grant (Section “Science, Technology, and Society”), for a project entitled “Richard Dedekind and the Structuralist Transformation of Modern Mathematics.” His goal is to write a monograph which would be the first book-length study of Dedekind’s important, but relatively neglected, contributions to the philosophy of mathematics. The NSF Grant (in combination with sabbatical leave credits) will allow him to devote the year 2009–2010 exclusively to research and writing on the topic.
12-Aug-09: Congratulations to Neal Tognazzini, who has been awarded a Mellon/ACLS Recent Doctoral Recipients Fellowship! This is in addition to the Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship that he held during the 2008–2009 school year.
03-Jun-09: Congratulations to Scott Sevier, who has won a UCR Alumni Association Neumann Scholarship for the 2009–2010 school year!
22-May-09: John Perry was recently interviewed for “Conversations with History”:
21-May-09: Please join us on May 30th, 2009, for the first annual lecture in the Bernd Magnus Lecture Series. This inaugural lecture will be given by Maudemarie Clark (UC Riverside) with commentary from Brian Leiter (University of Chicago) and Lanier Anderson (Stanford University). Also feel free to download the printable flyer.
15-May-09: Congratulations to Gerardo Sanchez and Kathy Saylor! They have been asked to present at the NACADA National Conference, September 30–October 3, 2009, “Transitioning from Undergraduate to Graduate,” selected by the Advising Graduate and Professional Students commission to be one of its sponsored sessions. Each NACADA commission can select a maximum of three proposals for this honor. Along with Mike Atienza (Academic Advisor for Medial & Cultural Studies), they gave this presentation in Las Vegas at the NACADA Regional Conference in March. NACADA was impressed with their presentation and they will be listed as commission-sponsored status in the program, which is a great honor.
12-May-09: Thanks to all who joined us for the John Perry conference! Pictures from the conference are now available.
30-Apr-09: Please join us in offering our congratulations to Larry Wright on winning this year’s UCR Academic Senate Distinguished Teaching Award! This is on top of Larry’s award last year (the CHASS Distinguished Teaching Award). This is a prestigious award that is richly deserved.
21-Apr-09: Detailed information on our conference honoring the work of John Perry is now available online.
11-Apr-09: Congratulations to Chris Franklin for winning a Chancellor’s Dissertation Completion Award for academic year 2009/10. This is a wonderful, and richly-deserved, award for Chris.

29-Mar-09: Congratulations to John Martin Fischer, whose latest book, Our Stories: Essays on Life, Death, and Free Will, is now available from Oxford University Press!
20-Mar-09: Contratulations to Georgia Warnke for receiving this year’s Center for Ideas and Society Distinguished Humanist Achievement Award! The award was given on the basis of her recent book with Cambridge University Press, After Identity, in the context of her many other accomplishments. Georgia will give a lecture later this year sponsored by the Center for Ideas and Society.
05-Mar-09: Please join us this Saturday, March 7th, for our annual Alumni Conference. The featured speakers are Andrew Eshleman, Mark Wrathall, and Leah McClimans.
14-Jan-09: We're hiring! We need to fill several temporary lecturer and TA positions.
