Three new faculty have joined the faculty this fall and are now in residence

  • Robin Jeshion joins us as full professor after having taught at Yale and after holding a Burkhardt Residential Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University during 2005-06. Robin specializes in the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, epistemology, philosophy of mathematics, and the history of analytic philosophy.

  • Michael Nelson joins us as assistant professor. Michael received his Ph.D. from Princeton in 2002 and has also taught at Yale. He specializes in philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, metaphysics and agency theory.

  • Coleen Macnamara joins us as assistant professor with a Masters of Bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania and her Ph.D. in philosophy from Georgetown University in 2006. She works in the areas of ethics and moral psychology, and in addition has teaching interests in ancient philosophy and feminism. Her dissertation is entitled Beyond Praise and Blame: A Theory of Holding Others Responsible.

The Department is hiring mark Wrathall, who will join the faculty next year. Mark is a noted Heidegger scholar, with wide-ranging expertise in phenomenology and existentialism. He is currently working on a book on the later Heidegger, and in addition to his work on Heidegger has written important articles on Merleau-Ponty.

  • Placement news: We are pleased to make the following announcements. Daniel Speak (Ph.D. 2002) has been offered a tenure track job at Loyola Marymount University. Dan has been teaching at Azusa Pacific University since he earned his Ph.D. Jessica Ludescher (Ph.D. expected 2007) has been offered a tenure track job at Seattle University in the Business School (in the area of business ethics), with a joint appointment in Philosophy. Matt Talbert (Ph.D. 2005) has been offered a tenure track position at West Virginia University. Matt has held a post-doc position at UC, San Diego for the last two years. Finally, Chris Campolo's (Ph.D. 2003) position at Hendrix College has been converted from an initial four year contract to a tenure track position. Congratulations to all!

  • Glen Pettigrove (Ph.D. 2003) has been awarded the Baumgart Memorial Fellowship from the APA. As a result, he will be giving three lectures on forgiveness at Arizona State University in 2007-08. Glen has been teaching at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand, since 2005.

  • Gustavo Llarull has been awarded the Barricelli Memorial Grant, administered by the Comparative Literature department for work in literature. Gustavo's dissertation in progress examines the relation between literature, narrativity, moral judgment and moral action.

  • David Chalmers will be giving this year's talks in the Distinguished Visitor Series, April 9-11. Details are available on our Colloquia page.

  • On Friday, January 12, the Department will sponsor a conference, "Risk, Science and the Law", to commemorate the publication of Carl Cranor's new book, Toxic Torts: Science, Law and the Possibility of Justice ( New York: Cambridge University Press, 2006). In expected order of appearance, the speakers will be:

    Kristin Shrader-Frechette, Professor of Philosophy and O'Neill Family Professor of Biological Sciences, University of Notre Dame

    Doug Maclean, Professor of Philosophy, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

    Thomas Hill, Jr., Kenan Professor of Philosophy, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

    Joe Cecil, Project Director, Division of Research, Federal Judicial Center

    In addition, Professor Dale Jamieson of New York University and Professor Andrew Light of the University of Washington will participate in the conference as discussants and session chairs.
